Follow-up

Principles

  1. Remember that God causes the growth.
  2. Build a relationship with the new believer. Create an environment of love, encouragement and rapport. Become his friend, spend time together having fun. Share yourself with him and share how Christ relates to you life. Learn to be a listener.
  3. Create a desire within him to grow spiritually. Make him aware of his need. Show him how Christ relates to that need by taking him to Scripture that has met a similar need in your life. Get him involved with other believers. Pray for him regularly,
  4. Meeting his need is more important than sticking to a schedule. Each individual is unique and has different questions. Therefore, your follow-up of one individual will never be exactly like that of any other.
  5. The person is more important than the program. Sometimes it takes three or four appointments to effectively communicate assurance of salvation, while at other times, a person may grasp scriptural principles very quickly. Be sensitive to the person and his particular needs. Don’t feel you have to fit everything into a rigid program.

Goals

  • With any activity – questionnaires, real life kits, debates, sign-up tables, weekly meeting sign ups, etc., the goal is to follow up every single one. Every name we have is an opportunity to raise up a multiplying disciple for Christ. The more we follow up, the more we can mobilize for the Great Commissoin.
  • Follow-up should be completed within three weeks of event, sign-up etc.
  • E-mail is a good initial contact tool, and can often “buy” you more time to meet at a later date, but should not be the only contact made with the person.
  • Face-to-face is always preferable to either phone or e-mail contact. Think of yourself: Are you more likely to join a Bible study that you were invited to over the phone or e-mail, or one that you were invited to in person, after meeting the leader, and got to know them?
  • People who may not be interested, or even aligned after a first contact with us (siq, sign-up sheet, weekly meeting, etc.), may come around after a meeting with a staff or top student. A carnal Christian who is explained the Spirit-filled life may have a significant turnaround, once God’s Spirit takes control of their life.
  • Many times non-Christians sign up for more info on C4C thinking that club involvement is the key to heaven. Your meeting with them can clarify how to come to faith.
  • With Christians, it is okay to meet with 3-4 students at a time. For evangelistic or Spirit-filled life appointments, it is usually preferable to meet them individually, to ensure they are open and honest with you and with God.
  • Whenever possible, have a student along with you on the appointment for training and modeling purposes. (Be sensitive that you are not “ganging up” on the person. Ask the contact if it is okay if you bring along a friend).
