Introduction

Note on Character Development

The goal of character development is Christ-likeness. Our assumption is that when a person grows in his walk with God, he will be more and more transformed into the image of Christ.

Often times, character development comes from seeing what is deficient in a new staff which would affect his effectiveness and relationships, rather than trying to accomplish a list of unending desirable character traits (1 Tim 3:1-3 & Tit 1:5-9). The key is knowing your staff, and knowing realistically how much time you have. The emphasis is progress, not perfection.

Having said the above, we recognize that there are some traits that may enhance a new staff’s effectiveness in ministry and his working relationships with others on the team.

  1. Understands and lives out the Spirit-filled life.
  2. Demonstrates integrity in all areas of life and ministry.
  3. Maintains a life of purity and holiness in relationships.
  4. Demonstrates humility and teachability.
  5. Has a good reputation with those outside the church.
  6. Demonstrates “soundness of speech”, seasoned with salt.

Spiritual Life and Disciplines

  1. Pursues an increasingly intimate relationship with God.
  2. Christian life characterized by the fruit of the Spirit.
  3. Demonstrates a life dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit (a life of faith).
  4. Understands the disciplines of prayer, fasting, bible study, worship, fellowship with other believers.
  5. To love God with all his heart, soul, mind, & strength (Mark 12:30).
  6. Exhibits freshness in his walk with God on a consistent basis.

Heart to Heart Talk

“Heart-to-Heart Talk” is a personal time with the trainee wherein the trainer and the trainee has to freedom to talk about deeper character issues. This is a time set aside where character issues are brought up in a relaxed environment, and dealt with in a loving and grace-filled conversation.

Some of the issues for this time include:

  1. Dealing with temptation/lust/thought life
  2. Self-esteem/image
  3. Bribery
  4. Personal walk with God/Q.T.
  5. Stewardship Issues : money
  6. Working with the opposite sex
  7. Social issues like : co-habitation, pre-marital sex, divorce
  8. Lying; use of the tongue
  9. Personal grooming; social etiquette
  10. Family issues and background
  11. Etc

The above list is not exhaustive.

Your trainee may or may not be struggling with the above issues. The point is that we want to surface these issues and search the Scripture for biblical answers and perspectives.
